General description of the collection: The Murray L. Carroll papers consist of a memoir recounting Carroll's service with the 34th Infantry Regiment. In it, he describes his work as Trial Counsel, rail line procedures in Cho'nan, and combat in Taejon. He mentions his struggles to obtain supplies for his platoon and speaks of those killed in Taejon as well as the recovery of their bodies in later combat. He also refers to poor relations between those in the Transportation Corps and those reassigned from combat duty.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Murray L. Carroll graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) unit at the University of Wyoming. He served with the 34th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, D Company, 2nd Platoon as a platoon leader. He also served as trial counsel with the Heavy Motor Company under Lieutenant William Carpenter. On 31 August 1950, the Division was reduced to zero strength and Carroll was transferred to the Eighth Army Transportation Corps....

The USS St. Mihiel was built by the American International Shipbuilding Corp. on Hogs Island, Pennsylvania in 1920. She was used as an army transport, carrying soldiers to and from battle. In 1923, she carried the last American soldiers back from Germany at the end of World War I. In 1943, the USS St. Mihiel was decommissioned to the Navy, where she served as an army hospital ship.
